De facto standard for UNSDI - GeoNetwork

UNGIWG consultant Jelle U. Hielkema made recently awareness on the open source international standards based geospatial information management capacity, GeoNetwork, developed by FAO since 2001 with support and participation from the World Food Programme (WFP), UNEP and the UN-Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and which is now widely accepted as a de facto standard for UNSDI, both within and outside the UN system.
The attached article describes this capacity in some detail and furthermore are you advised to consult www.geonetwork-opensource.org and www.fao.org/geonetwork for further information.

GeoNetwork opensource as Reference Implementation for OGC Catalog Services for the Web

As reported by Jeroen Ticheler of FAO NRCE today, they have successfully finished work on implementing the Open Geospatial Consortium Catalog Services for the Web (OGC-CSW) specification in the GeoNetwork opensource Catalog System, the basis for the FAO GeoNetwork. As a result of the project, GeoNetwork opensource is the so-called Reference Implementation of the CSW specification for the OGC. Details can be found here:

The implementation is a recognition of FAO's work on making spatial data (like maps and satellite data) more accessible, using open standards to do so.

GeoNetwork is a web based Geographic Metadata Catalog System developed by FAO-UN, WFP-UN and UNEP. The system implements the ISO 19115 Geographic Metadata and ISO 23950 (Z39.50) . Total project downloads to date: 1638.
